WLU and the City of Waterloo partnering with Special Olympics Ontario

Wilfrid Laurier University and the City of Waterloo will be official Games Partners for the Special Olympics Ontario 2020 Spring Games.
The announcement of the partnership was made on Thursday, December 12th at Lazardis Hall.
According to a press release from the Waterloo Regional Police, more than 2,500 athletes, coaches, staff and volunteers will be in Waterloo Region between May 21st and May 23rd, 2020 for the event.
President and Vice-Chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University, Dr. Deborah MacLatchy, says hosting Special Olympics Ontario is a wonderful opportunity for organizations in the community to showcase their ability to come together and give back.
“Events such as these highlight the positive impact we can have by reaching beyond our organizational boundaries and make a wider contribution to Special Olympics and the great work they do.” said MacLatchy in the release.
Besides being Games Partners, the city and university will also act as venue hosts.
The powerlifting, basketball and swimming competitions will be held at Laurier, while the city will host the rhythmic gymnastics competition, along with the opening and closing ceremonies.
Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworsky said in the release, the city is pleased to be hosting these events.
“Athletes participating in this great event are an inspiration and provide a wonderful example of the best part of the sport, namely – dedication, pushing yourself to do your best while embodying great sportsmanship.” said Jaworsky.
“I'm looking forward to the event and wish all participating athletes great success.”
In the release, Chief of Police Bryan Larkin said regional police are extremely grateful for the support of both Laurier and the City of Waterloo.
“By coming on board as Games Partners, both Wilfrid Laurier University and the City of Waterloo are making a profound difference in the lives of these athletes and are providing then with a chance to showcase their talent on the Olympic stage.” said Larkin.
