Wellesley breaking ground on new recreation complex

By Germain Ma

Wellesley is hosting a ground-breaking ceremony Monday morning for a new recreation complex.

The event is at the site of the future development, at the corner of Hutchison Road and Queens Bush Road.

“This world-class facility is the next step in building spaces for our community to connect, grow and gather and will complement the existing recreation facilities throughout the Township,” said Wellesley Mayor Joe Nowak.

Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Mike Harris, Chief Administrative Officer Rik Louwagie, Something For Everyone Campaign Chair Chris Martin, and other township representatives will also be in attendance.

The new recreation complex is scheduled to be completed by fall next year.

It will include:

  • a single pad ice rink
  • walking track
  • 8 dressing rooms (with 2 fully accessible rooms)
  • Junior “C” dressing room
  • storage for community groups
  • a youth centre
  • senior centre
  • gymnasium (that can be used as a community centre)
  • commercial kitchen
  • skate park
  • multi-use court
  • active outdoor play centre
  • meeting rooms
  • fitness rooms
  • 2 soccer fields
  • outdoor walking trail

In June 2021, $16.128 million in provincial funding was announced at Wellesley Arena and Community Centre, which is deteriorating.
