Kitchener’s TWB Brewery brings forward ‘polar’ patio experience this winter

By Divya Gill

Together We're Bitter Co-operative Brewing in Kitchener is introducing a “polar” patio experience this winter, where folks are encouraged to grab a blanket, dress for the weather, and enjoy the variety of beers the brewery offers.

“We were excited to try something new, and we brought forward the polar patio. We are trying to embrace the Canadian winter. We [have] our picnic table, and there is some wind protection, and on those sunny winter days, it is nice to sit out there and enjoy a quick beer,” said Aleksandra Szaflarska, one of seven owners of TWB Brewery.

The craft brewing company has been operating for almost six years. But, Szaflarska said, like many other small businesses, the brewery was also hit with “change after change, pivot after pivot.” The one aspect that kept them going was their connection with the community and with their customers.

“We had a lot of customers tell us they would love to come out during winter months. They wouldn't stick around for long, but they would love to enjoy a beer on their patio to stay connected and have a little time outside the home.”

The brewery has about eight different beers on tap, and it is also continuing its beer service delivery every day. Beer lovers can go online and purchase cans or even merchandise for delivery or contactless pickup.

Szaflarska added their patio licence expired on Dec. 31. But as new pandemic restrictions were announced, the polar patio became critical.

“The city, moved very quickly, and we were able to get that licence extended, which is great. It means small businesses across the region can keep their patios open and welcome folks out to their place.

“We are certainly not at the point where we are thriving, but we're doing well. We are surviving,” said Szaflarska.
