THEMUSEUM opens immersive Rolling Stones UNZIPPED exhibition

By Germain Ma

Calling all Rolling Stones fans, THEMUSEUM will open its UNZIPPED exhibition about the iconic rock band on Tuesday.

It's the first international exhibition about the Stones, and it's landed in downtown Kitchener after stints in Europe, Asia, and the United States.

Visitors will get to experience The Stones' history and influence in an exhibition that features about 300 objects from the band's personal collection including: costumes, posters, album covers, instruments, stage designs; and works from artists like Andy Warhol and Prada.

Visitors will also get to listen to rare audio fragments, see a replica of the Stones' recording studio, and experience a concert in 3D.

“This is way more than the Rolling Stones. It's guitars, if you like guitars. If you like art, there are 7 original Warhols. Engineering, the creation of the stages for the Steel Wheels Touryou see how they begin and create such an enormous stage,” said David Marskell, CEO of THE MUSEUM.

Marskell said UNZIPPED is also a snapchat into the era.

He said, “It's from 1962 on, and that backdrop included: the assassination of Kennedy, the Vietnam War, women's liberation, and social injustice. That comes out in their lyrics and it comes out in the artwork of their albums.”

Marskell believes attendance to this exhibit will surpass numbers from its 'Titanic: Te Artifact Exhibit,' which drew over 50,000 visitors.

He said organizers hope it will reboot the region's economy and hospitality sector.

“An international cultural experience of this caliber will be a key tourist driver in the post COVID-19 period, which will not only further enhance THEMUSEUM's track record of delivering world class exhibitions but will also serve to reinvigorate tourism in Southwestern Ontario and Canada,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic of Kitchener in a press release.

There will be health precautions in place, all staff are vaccinated, and hand sanitizer will be readily available.

THEMUSEUM is also releasing tickets at 70 per cent capacity to reduce crowding.

Visitors can see UNZIPPED from November 30, 2021 to February 27, 2022.
