Sonny’s in Waterloo closes ‘until further notice’ after business, property sold

A 'closed' sign is now donning the front doors to Sonny's restaurant in Waterloo.

It was announced back in May that the food landmark on Weber Street was up for sale. 

The former owner has now confirmed to CityNews 570 that both the business and the property have been purchased. 

Paul Noussis said he isn't able to publicly identify the new owners but noted they're set to take over at the end of the month. 

It's not clear what the future of the property holds, as Noussis was only able to confirm the sale and said he isn't aware what the new owners' plans are. 

“I would like to say that I would loved to have had a winding down of sorts but unfortunately I didn't have staffing that would have been capable of handling the surge of business with the announcement that Sonny's had sold would have created,” wrote Noussis. “I would like to thank all my loyal customers and staff for the years of memories, support and friendships I've made over the years!”

The sign on the restaurant's doors said Sonny's will remain closed until further notice. 

The drive-in was first established in 1965 and has become a beloved burger joint, and is also well known for its fish and chips and onion rings. 

Both the business and property were initially listed for a combined asking price of up to $3-million.

A request has been made to the involved realtor for details on the sale.
