ROW public health suspends enforcement of Immunization of School Pupils Act for 2022-2023 school year

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

If your child attends a local public or Catholic school and is overdue for a required immunization, Region of Waterloo Public Health is giving you more time to catch up.

Public health is suspending the annual enforcement of the Immunization of School Pupils Act for the 2022-2023 school year.

The Act requires certain vaccinations for things like Hepatitis B and Meningitis, and students usually face suspension if they don't abide and don't have a medical or religious exemption.

Public health is allowing more leniency because of the COVID-19 pandemic, saying many students missed the opportunity to get their required immunizations.

The move is only temporary though. Full enforcement is expected to resume for the 2023-2024 school year.

Public health will be hosting catch-up immunization clinics and will also be visiting secondary schools starting this month in order to provide easy access.

More details on the clinics can be found by clicking here.
