‘Disaster waiting to happen;’ residents rally in support of wetlands

By Brandon Maher

Residents of Cambridge are getting together to show support for environmental land in the province.

Aiming to bring attention to the environmental impacts of Bill 23, known as the More Homes Built Faster Act, organizers of the event called the legislation a threat to wetlands in the province by dismantling the Greenbelt and selling off conservation land.

Colleen Cooper, co-organizer of the event, explained that wetlands filter drinking water, manage floods and prevent landslides and erosion.

“Over the last fifty years or so, we have already lost 72 per-cent of our wetlands,” Cooper remarked. “Wetlands are disappearing at three times the rate that forests are.”

Cooper added that Bill 23 is a disaster waiting to happen.

The rally will be held at the Dumfries Conservation Area in Cambridge this afternoon from 1:00pm to 2:00pm.

Organizers said they can provide a creative sign or you can bring one of your own.
