There's a lot going on at the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF), according to the latest Statistics Canada Annual Aircraft Movement Statistics Report.
It was ranked YKF as the sixth busiest airport in the country last year.
Over 133,000 movements were recorded at the regional airport, just below the 138,000 recorded at Calgary/Springbank.
The airport also points out a passenger record was set in 2021, as over 171,000 travelled through the airport.
It was an over 245 per cent increase compared to 2019, and a direct result of Flair Airlines offering flights out of YKF. Flair now offers flights to 12 destinations out of the local airport.
“YKF is the busiest general aviation airport in Ontario. Flight training has always accounted for over half of our aircraft movements,” Airport General Manager, Chris Wood, explained in a news release. “We are the proud home of the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre, one of Canada’s largest professional flight training schools. General aviation built this airport and will continue to thrive as we grow.”
The airport is also undergoing an expansion. Phase one is expected to wrap up next spring.
