Rangers fall to Storm 5-2 Sunday

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The Guelph Storm and Kitchener Rangers don't get along.

The rivalry between the two franchises was on full display in the Royal City Sunday afternoon.

After the Rangers smacked the Storm 5-0 Friday night at The Aud, Guelph returned the favour and topped Kitchener 5-2 Sunday afternoon.

“They played a similar game,” said Rangers head coach Jay McKee, about the Storm. “We just didn't have the chemistry and connection we did at home.”

It was the third-straight three-in-three for Kitchener, and they haven't had much luck in the bulked-up weekends, only winning one game each weekend.

After going 0-for-7 on the power play Friday, the Storm went 2-for-5 on home ice. The Rangers went 1-for-5 but deserved at least one more after a blatant missed call by the referees.

Greg Meireles was smoked from behind by Waterloo native Nate Schnarr, and refs didn't call it.

“They didn't see it,” said McKee about the explanation the refs gave him. “I don't know how they don't see that. He gets clearly a hit from behind, he's gushing blood from his head and there's no call.

“I have a lot of respect for the refs in the league. They're human. They make mistakes. I think they made a glaring mistake there. That was a dangerous play.”

Kyle Gentles left the game in the third period with a lower-body injury and didn't return. Doctors will need to evaluate Gentles before a timeframe for a return.

The Rangers have now lost five of their last seven games. Their road struggles continue as well, losing their last five away from East Avenue.

The good news for Kitchener is four of their next five are at home.
