Petition calling for immediate moratorium on homeless encampment evictions in the region

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

A new Change.org petition has surfaced online for an immediate moratorium on encampment evictions in the region.

This comes a week after an encampment was cleared on regional property in Kitchener — at the corner of Stirling and Charles Streets — that involved regional bylaw staff using a front-end loader.

Jude Oudshoorn is the petition organizer. He said in the petition statement many residents were shocked by how regional staff cleared the encampment.

“On Friday November 26, 2021, many people shocked, disgusted, and heartbroken when Region of Waterloo bylaw, together with police, as part of an encampment eviction, used a front-end loader to destroy the shelters and possessions of unhoused people at the corner of Charles and Stirling streets,” he said.

The statement goes on to say that it will make our region a more compassionate and loving community.

The region has committed to doing a review of how staff handled the encampment eviction.

Chief Administrative Officer Bruce Lauckner said the region needs to do better.
