NDP leadership bid not being ruled out by MPP Fife

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

After it was announced Thursday night that NDP leader Andrea Horwath would be stepping down from her post as leader, it leaves the party looking at other members who could bring a leadership bid forward.

Two of the five local MPP's re-elected Thursday both represent the NDP. Catherine Fife is heading into her fourth term representing Waterloo at Queen's Park. Laura Mae Lindo was re-elected in Kitchener Centre.

Fife was a guest on the Mike Farwell Show and she didn't rule out a potential run at the leadership.

“I've seen the sacrifices that party leaders make. The political arena is very hostile, very negative. That conversation and dedication requires also the support of family and friends,” she said, “I'm going to be havig those conversations and then I will see where I land.”

The party will be trying to figure out where to go next. Fife suggests that it will be a process that may take some time.

“There will be an interim leader and a leadership race and this will provide an opportunity I hope for us to really tell Ontarians who we are and why we try and do the work that we do.”

Fife thanked Andrea Horwath for leading the party through challenging times.

Laura Mae Lindo also offering comments on Horwath stepping down suggesting she wasn't ready to hear the leader resign but she understands her feelings.

“It's courageous to say 'look, I brought everybody as far as I can so now I'm handing it over to you,' she said, “I'm really grateful to her for all of the work that she has done because we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for her tenacity which got us here.”
