Kitchener’s newest public school to be called Oak Creek

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The Waterloo Region District School Board has announced the name of its newest elementary school in Kitchener.

Oak Creek Public School will open this September. It's located at 80 Tartan Avenue, which is in the Huron Park area.

The school will be able to accommodate almost 600 students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. It will also have a child care centre, as well as a community centre run by the City of Kitchener.

The name brings together two natural features located near the school. Oak comes from the oak trees that are native to the area, with creek honouring Strasburg Creek, which is also close by.

The name was approved by trustees at a committee of the whole meeting on February 14. Over 120 names were submitted over several weeks during the school board's community engagement campaign.
