Kitchener hospitals receiving $18M from province to ease financial pressure

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Grand River Hospital is receiving $10 million and $8 million is on its way to St. Mary's General Hospital to help recover from financial pressures created and worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Ford government is providing over $696 million to hospitals across Ontario this year.

The government points out many hospitals are struggling with annual funding deficits which have been exacerbated by the pandemic. The money is to be used on historic working funds deficits.

“Our government has been clear that we will use every tool at our disposal to support our hospitals. St. Mary's and Grand River are pillars of our health care system here in Waterloo Region, providing high quality care to local residents and this $18 million will ensure that care continues and can be expanded now and into the future,” said Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Mike Harris.

The president of St. Mary's says the funding will provide relief to the many new working capital pressures the hospital has faced throughout the pandemic.
