Kitchener Councillor Debbie Chapman will seek re-election

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Ward 9 Councillor for the City of Kitchener, Debbie Chapman, has announced she intends to run again in the upcoming municipal election.

Chapman has so far served one term, though she has sat on numerous committees and boards since 2006, such as the Grand River Hospital Board and the Safe and Healthy Community Advisory Committee.

“My first term on Kitchener City Council has underscored the critical value of the years I spent working with people in grassroots community groups. The work I have done has enabled me to be an effective voice for those citizens who often feel left out of local politics,” Chapman said in a news release.

“My background teaching courses in urban politics and democracy at Wilfrid Laurier University helps inform and reinforce the positions I take on issues affecting residents of Ward 9 and Waterloo Region at large.”

She currently chairs the city's Planning and Strategic Initiatives Committee.

Chapman also sits on the following boards and committees:

  • Kitchener Housing Inc.
  • Downtown Business Improvement Area
  • Multicultural Centre of KW
  • Horticultural Society Kitchener
  • Environmental Advisory Committee
  • Downtown Action Advisory Committee
  • Grand River Accessibility Advisory Committee
  • Victoria Park Working Group
  • Heritage Kitchener Committee

“As a city councillor I advocate greater representation and decision-making power of people within the BIPOC, LGBTQ2+ communities and those with disabilities, and a balanced approach to downtown development and community needs that includes more parkland in the downtown core.”

The nomination period is open from May 2 until Aug. 19. The municipal election will take place on Oct. 24.
