A huge celebration attended by thousands took place at Carl Zehr Square in Kitchener on Friday.

It's all a part of K-W Oktoberfest 2018 opening day celebrations and the 50th year for North America's largest Bavarian festival.

Miss Oktoberfest, Sandra Dynka, says Oktoberfest is more than just a grand celebration.

“Oktoberfest is a family.. that's what it feels like. The community just completely sews into that and they're so supportive, and everyone loves Oktoberfest, and it's such a great time of the year,” Dynka says.

President of Kitchener Waterloo Oktoberfest, Margo Jones, says she is proud to see such a huge turnout for opening day celebrations.

“Oh my gosh — I am over the top! It is amazing. The people that are coming out, the people that are visiting from far away, they are visiting especially for our 50th anniversary,” Jones says.

KW Oktoberfest executive director, Alfred Lowrick, says there are a lot of special details in place to commemorate the 50th Oktoberfest celebrations.

“You'll notice Onkel Hans with a gold tie, because that's for the 50 years, golden anniversary. So that's there, a little small thing, and we also had a 50th anniversary concert.”

Lowrick says opening day celebrations may be over but there is still a lot more to look forward to for the next couple weeks.

“This is a great day, and we're kicking off the 50th anniversary with so many different things. We are excited about all the different things people are going to be able to see in the next week.”

The gathering of thousands at City Hall every year for Oktoberfest, makes KW home of the second largest Oktoberfest celebration in the world.
