Marking National Indigenous Peoples Day, the City of Waterloo has partnered once again with Indigenous artist Luke Swinson for the installation of a new mural in Uptown Waterloo.
That mural features two people connecting in the shape of a heart, as part of Indigenous artist Luke Swinson's theme of connection and relationships. Below that image are the Anishinaabe words “gizaagi'in”, which Swinson said translates to “I love you.”
Speaking to the details of his piece, Swinson said the mural represents “all important relationships in our lives, and how they shape us as individuals and community members.”
“Indigenous Peoples Day shares time with Pride Month, and I believe there is a unity between them,” said Swinson. “Love and acceptance is important to us all, and I wanted to remind people of that with this public art piece.”
The City of Waterloo has also noted that the artwork serves as a “visual reminder” of the territory and land on which the city was founded.
“Today isn't just a celebration of our diverse cultures, it is also a celebration of the Earth and our reciprocal relationship with her.” said Swinson. “This piece is dedicated to all the Indigenous people who fight every day for this important bond.”
You can see Swinson's public mural in Uptown Waterloo's Public Square.
