Freezing rain is expected for Waterloo Region today, and with extreme weather often comes power outages.
Waterloo North Hydro is reminding people that being prepared is just as important as knowing what to do when it happens.
Before an outage, make sure you have a plan for you and your family to follow.
Include a list of emergency numbers in an emergency kit. It should include a cell phone, flashlights, candles, blankets and other warmth items, a first aid kit, and bottled water.
That kit is meant to prepare you for the first 72 hours without power. You can see a full list of what to include in your kit here.
If you're headed outside and see downed lines, keep away and call 911. Never try to move the wires or use water on them if they're on fire.
If someone is hurt and still touching power lines, do not touch them or their car, if they're in one.
You can track and report outages in Waterloo, Kitchener and Cambridge online.
