Fee going up for volunteer police background checks

By Blair Adams

The cost to get a volunteer police records check is going up $5 as of the new year.

Waterloo Regional Police say they are doing so in an effort to continue to offer a high-level of service to the public, plus reduce wait times.

Police do over 42,000 record checks annually and say requests have been been steadily increasing each year.

They say that can result in delays during peak periods, especially during the months of September and October.

As of January 1, 2020, the fee will be $15 and the following year it will increase to $20.

There will be no change to the fee for an employment police record check, which was revised two years ago.

Police will also be implementing new hours at their reporting centre at 150 Maple Grove Road in Cambridge (effective Jan. 1, 2020).

Those hours will be:

  • Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Closed on Statutory Holidays (open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Easter Monday and the Civic Holiday.
  • Open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Remembrance Day if it falls during a weekday)

Volunteer and employment applicants can also continue to use the online option.
