Elan organic sesame whole seeds recalled due to possible salmonella

By Dani-Elle Dubé

Health Canada has issued a food recall warning for a brand of organic sesame seeds due to possible salmonella contamination.

The agency issued the recall on Friday for Elan brand organic sesame whole seeds size 250 g bag on Saturday, November 20.

The Elan products were sold in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Alberta and British Columbia.

The Lot codes for the Elan products are:

  • 21047
  • 21030

The recall was triggered by test results.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of the product.

Health Canada says food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick.

Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections.

Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea.

Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

If you think you have become sick from consuming a recalled product, call your doctor.

Check to see if you have the recalled product in your home.

Do not consume the recalled product.

Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.

Since the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is conducting a food safety investigation, this may lead to the recall of other products.

If other high-risk products are recalled, CFIA will notify the public through updated food recall warning.
