By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The mayor's race in Waterloo was close.

Dorothy McCabe will become the city's new mayor.

McCabe edged Shannon Weber by just over 300 votes. McCabe ended up with over 9,500 votes (43.3 per cent), and 9,212 votes were cast for Weber (42.02 per cent).

Current Mayor Dave Jaworsky decided not to run for re-election.

“I'm really … excited. It's really starting to sink in. You know, mostly I'm just excited for what's next for Waterloo.” McCabe said at her victory party Monday evening.

She said her first priority will be to work with the new council and staff to secure a piece of public land for an affordable housing project.
