Coldest Night of the Year Walkathon happening today

Hundreds of participants will be raising money tonight, as part of the ninth annual Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser, organized by Ray of Hope Community Centre.

Chief Development officer, Scott Brush, says the goal this year is to raise 165-thousand dollars through the 2k, 5k and 10k walk-a-thons.

“That really represents 35 per cent of the Ray of Hope Community Centre's operating budget. That's a big chunk in terms of what we do and how we help the community. Daily, we serve over 200 people meals. We're also a part of the Food Bank's Food Network, so we're giving food hampers on a weekly basis to a number of families in need.”

He says is the ninth year that Ray of Hope has organized the Coldest Night of the Year walkathon.

“When we started nine years ago, it was just us and two other walk partners in Toronto. So it's grown in the last nine years so that there are 134 walk partners across Canada. Locally, we have a number of walks, the KW walk, there's a walk in Elmira, a walk in St. Agatha, in Cambridge, as well as in Stratford and Guelph.”

He says up to 600 people are expected to take part in Kitchener's walk, which will start at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
