Angie’s in Uptown Waterloo closing down

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

One of the oldest establishments in Uptown Waterloo is shutting its doors.

Angie's restaurant in Uptown Waterloo will close later this month after 59 years, selling the property and making way for a new development.

The business was started by Angie and Bill Graham in 1962, and has since been passed down to their daughter Teresa Huegle, and her husband Rob.

Teresa said in a release “loyal customers, and staff made it possible for us to be successful for such a long time.”

She adds, the restaurant had opened when she was thirteen years old and to group up with the staff brings tears to her eyes. But, this is something they have been thinking about for a while, saying “after the first wave of Covid, it gave us time to reflect on how we were doing, what we were doing and what was going to be  important.”

“Bob and I came to open up Angies again, and we looked at each other and said this is everything you are not supposed to do. Covid had really changed the way we did business. We are doing takeout now and it has worked out well for us”

Teresa said she saw so much change when the Light Rail Transit came and all the businesses in the area that were dying in front of my eyes and nothing was done about it. Now as we face the pandemic, it is still devastating what we are watching in the world right now.

“Going out now is bittersweet. The people met became my dear friends.”

“They impacted our lives with all their stories, struggles and joys. They became Family! It has been a wonderful journey, and now we look forward to the next chapter, spending time with our grandchildren, gardening, and putting our feet up.”

“We lived, breathed and had a passion for the business and the people we connected with.”

Angie's Waterloo will be open for takeout until May 30th.
