$90,000 of federal funding to go towards flood study in New Hamburg

By Ariel Deutschmann

The Grand River Conservation Authority has recieved a $90,000 grant from the National Disaster Mitigation Program.

The grant will cover up to half of the cost of the project, which is estimated to be $180,000.

The GRCA applied for funding in September in response to discussions between Wilmot Township and New Hamburg residents on recent flood events in the region.

The funding will be used to update flood zone mapping of the Wilmot area, along with reviewing potential mitigate flood risks on the Nith River.

At least two public information centres by the GRCA will be held on the study, with one taking place in early spring or summer.

The findings from the study will also support future external funding to assist the cost of implementing flood risk options in New Hamburg.

The GRCA is also working on two other projects funded by the NDMP; the Haldimand County Lake Erie Shoreline Hazard Mapping Update and the GRCA Floodplain Mapping Updates.
