Dentists asking to be included in early phases of Ontario’s vaccine rollout

By Erin Anderson

The Ontario Dental Association is calling on the Ford government to prioritize dentists for COVID-19 vaccinations in the months ahead.

The ODA said it sent a letter to Health Minister Christine Elliott in early December, asking for dentists and dental staff to be included on the priority list of health care professionals set to receive shots in the first phases of the roll-out.

“The ODA understands the immense stress the province is under as they navigate through this pandemic,” said ODA President Dr. Lesli Hapak in a release. “But dentists are a key part of the healthcare system and provide specialty care that improves the health and well-being of millions of Ontarians every year. We need early access to the COVID-19 vaccine.”

The ODA said dentists are in direct risk of contracting COVID-19 as they continue to operate through the pandemic.

The association represents 90 per cent of Ontario dentists.
