As students return to the virtual classroom, the Waterloo Region District School Board is moving ahead with a move to protect teachers.
The board has voted in favour of a motion to allow teachers and staff to use their own Health Canada-approved N95 masks, as the province works to supply schools with more PPE.
This is for staff members who are slated to get N95 respirators from the Ministry of Education, and can utilize them until the supply from the province arrives.
The motion also calls for staff who choose to use current ministry-supplied PPE instead to do so.
Trustees Mike Ramsay and Kathi Smith voted against the motion brought forward by trustee Jayne Herring.
The motion also called for a letter to be written to the province to get N95 masks for students as well.
Meantime, more HEPA filtration units are set to arrive in local classrooms in the next few weeks.
