Vaccines have prevented over 500 COVID-related deaths in region: estimates

By Mark Pare

Unvaccinated individuals are being admitted to hospitals and ICU's in Waterloo Region at about five times the rate of vaccinated people in the last few months.

According to the region's COVID-19 vaccine impact dashboard updated Friday, 88 people who are unvaccinated have been treated in hospital since September 1, compared to the 17 people in hospital in the same time frame.

Since the start of September, 25 unvaccinated people have been sent to the ICU, compared to five people who have been fully vaccinated.

Expand on that even further, and 176 unvaccinated people have been admitted to ICU since the beginning of the vaccine rollout nearly a year ago, and only seven have been fully vaccinated.

That number prompted Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworsky to tweet a picture of the dashboard with the caption “a picture is worth a thousand words.”

Meantime, the region said on Friday it's estimated vaccines have helped to prevent 10,534 cases among adults, 2,477 hospitalizations and 509 deaths.
