School boards preparing for potential requests to switch to remote learning

With mask mandates set to be lifted in classrooms on Monday, local school boards are preparing for any requests to switch students to remote learning.

The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) confirmed that families looking to move to virtual learning temporarily will be able to contact their child's principal next week.

“We recognize that some families might not be comfortable with their children returning to school after March Break on March 21, 2022,” said an e-mail statement to CityNews 570. “If you have concerns about your child returning to In-Person learning, please reach out to your school administrator on Monday, March 21 for next steps regarding remote learning opportunities.”

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) will also accept requests regarding remote learning, but it will be limited.

“We are not prepared to re-organize the school system at this time, so we will have limited ability to fully satisfy the requests that will come forward,” said a WCDSB spokesperson.

The Catholic board said it will continue to prioritize the health and safety of students and staff as they return to face-to-face learning.
