Region of Waterloo Public Health reports rise in COVID-related hospitalizations, one new death

Region of Waterloo Public Health is reporting one new COVID-related death in its weekly update. It raises the local death toll to 474.

"Today we are reporting one COVID-19-related death in our community," read a statement from Waterloo Region's Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang. "The individual was a female in her 90s. I would like to express my deep sympathy to the family of this individual."

Hospitalizations have jumped by 15 since the past week, to 50 in total. One patient is in intensive care with COVID-19, a decrease of four over last Friday.

300 new cases were also confirmed, putting the overall total at 50,305. The resolved case rate is 98 per cent.

The active caseload is now 332 - rising for the second time in as many weeks. 

86.7 per cent of residents five and over in Waterloo Region are now fully vaccinated. Over 1.41 million doses have been administered to local residents, including over 309,095 third doses. 52.8 per cent of residents have received a third dose.

52.6 per cent of children between 5 and 11 have received at least one dose. 40.8 per cent are fully vaccinated.
