COVID-19 case numbers have been rising and so have the fines to those not following the safety measures put in place by the province to help control the spread of the virus.

Regional Chair Karen Redman provided enforcement details during Friday's weekly COVID-19 community update.

Redman said that 10 new fines were issued, eight by Waterloo bylaw for gatherings at private residences. Each fine was for $880.

The current limit for indoor organized public events and social gatherings is 25 people. If it's outdoors, up to 100 are permitted.

Public health officials handed out an $880 ticket at The Pick and Shovel restaurant in Cambridge. It was for allegedly failing to comply with Step 3 requirements under the Reopening Ontario Act.

One $240 fine was also issued by Grand River Transit security for failing to comply with the face-covering bylaw.

Redman also spoke about the provincial government's decision to pause the next step of reopening.

“This is a prudent decision made out of an abundance of caution to keep people safe. We're not out of the woods yet, we need to keep following public health measures and to do our part to keep the community safe.” she noted.
