Divorce counsellor offering advice to keep marriages strong during COVID-19

With many couples stuck at home together during the COVID-19 pandemic, disagreements and arguments could become more common.

A local expert is offering some tips to keep relationships strong during this time of chaos.

Colette Fortin, Partner, Fairway Divorce Solutions told the Mike Farwell Show on 570 NEWS it's important that couples communicate and plan out their days.

“If you have young kids, tag some sort of tag-team approach and look at, one person may have to get up earlier and do the 7 to 9 a.m. shift at work, while the other is with the kids, and then flipping back in forth is really important.”

She said it's also important that couples that are working from home define an office space for themselves.

“Get creative about trying to find and repurpose an area where you can have a separate space.”

Fortin said a lot of the breakdown comes from a lack of communication, that is easily solvable.

“I don't think it's about necessarily agreeing on everything but just taking advantage of this time to relearn and learn how to talk.”

Separation is also an important thing to do during this time according to Fortin.

“Claiming a little bit of me-time so that you can be your best self when you come together for work and parenting and all those things, we need to take that time for ourselves.”

Ultimately, she is reinforcing the importance of communication to help deal with the changes we are going through.
