Special weather statement issued for Waterloo Region

Waterloo Region and much of Southern Ontario are under a special weather statement.
Environment Canada says a disturbance in the US is forecast to track north east towards the great lakes this weekend.
Snow ahead of this disturbance is expected to reach Southwestern Ontario Friday night, and then continue to track north.
Warning Preparedness Meteorologist at Environment Canada Marie-Eve Giguere tells 570 News we haven’t had anywhere near our normal amount of snowfall for the month of December which is usually 38cm.
“We’re expecting steady snow…it will continue throughout the day Saturday…we’re looking at about 5cm at this point.”
She warns this could be the first significant snowfall of the season for some areas including Waterloo Region and Toronto.
“For anybody planning to travel near Hamilton or Burlington this is where we are expecting the higher snowfall amounts…of about 10-20cm”
A winter storm warning is now in effect for Hamilton and Burlington.
Giguere adds the below seasonal temperatures will continue for the rest of weekend but we can expect more seasonal temperatures next week.
