Ward 9 will stand

It took a few months, but the Kitchener City Councillor for Ward 9 has been determined.

After a manual recount that lasted more than two hours, Frank Etherington has been declared the official winner, and his opponent, Debbie Chapman has conceded.

Etherington won the race by one vote.

There were six disputed ballots in the manual recount at Kitchener City Hall, all of which were later declared over votes by the city clerk.

Etherington says he is delighted by the result, but calls the recount a game he never wanted to play.

He estimates the process cost taxpayers thousands of dollars.

After the recount, Chapman congratulated Etherington on his win.

She says the process was fair and transparent and that she’s pleased with the outcome.

Chapman adds that it’s too soon to say whether she’ll run for city council again.
