Gary’s daily commentary:
As a kid I cheered for the Red Wings, and anybody that beat the Leafs. I got over it. For the past 23 years, my Wings have been in the hunt for Lord Stanley’s prized mug. Sometimes only four games in, but they consistently get invited to the prom. The Leafs, are another story, and quite frankly so are the Senators, Jets, Canucks, Flames and Oilers. If, like some suggest, we should cheer for whatever Canadian team is left standing, then the entire country should be waving the flag of Les Habitants. My two younger brothers and two of my closest friends are Habs fans. I want them to be happy, but to suggest because of my birth certificate I can switch face paint at the drop of a puck is just wrong. Here is the formula I have followed since moving to KW. I cheer for the Wings. If and when they find themselves on the golf course, then I cheer for whichever team has the most former Kitchener Rangers. If that’s not evident, I cheer against the team that has the most former London Knights. I’m not good at math, so this formula works for me. I watched Jakub Kindl and my Wings beat Derek Roy and the Blues yesterday. I tend to watch the NHL through the East Avenue lens. I don’t know what team you cheer for, or against. I do know that a lot of hockey fans should tape their ankles. Jumping on and off bandwagons during the playoffs can be hazardous to your health.
