Cameron Reid named Rangers captain as Kitchener remains undefeated

Friday was a big night for the Kitchener Rangers at the Memorial Auditorium, as they continued their undefeated season and unveiled the newest team captain.

Before the game, the Rangers announced that veteran defenceman Cameron Reid would be returning from NHL camp with the Nashville Predators and would become the team’s 60th captain in franchise history.

The team also announced four alternate captains: Luke Ellinas, Carson Campbell, Luca Romano and Jacub Chromiak.

The Erie Otters took an early lead in the first period with a goal from Callum Hughes. The Rangers tied things up in the second period with a power play goal from Haeden Ellis.

It would be the third period where the Rangers’ offense would really take off. Luca Romano got the lead for the Rangers on a power play goal with an assist from the newly minted captain, making it 2-1. Thirty seconds later, Erie tied it up with a goal from Ty Challenger.

Jack Pridham scored the eventual game winner just minutes later with another assist from Reid, marking his first of the season. Tanner added more two goals to help solidify the 5-2 win.

After the game, Reid spoke with 570 colour commentator Josh Piercey on what it felt like to become the team’s next captain.

“It’s an amazing feeling and I’m truly honoured to hopefully lead to a Memorial Cup win this year,” he said. “That’s the end goal and that’s what all the guys are thinking too. Just to be captain of a team like this and a franchise like this is the best feeling in the world.”

Reid and the rest of the Rangers will have a chance to continue their winning ways on Saturday night as they head to Owen Sound to take on the Attack.

Puck drop is a 7 p.m.
