Mayors react to Mark Carney winning the Liberal leadership race

Sending out congratulations, while laying out their expectations; mayors from in and around the Region of Waterloo have shared their thoughts on Mark Carney winning the federal Liberal leadership race.

Kitchener Mayor Berry Vranovic wrote in a social media post: “The challenging road ahead facing Canada’s cities and communities like Kitchener is significant.”

The mayor said he’s committed to working with Carney and his governments, together with organizations like the Big City Mayors’ Caucus, “to ensure a strong and prosperous future for Kitchener and all of Canada’s cities…”

Waterloo Mayor Dorothy McCabe, tells 570 NewsRadio she had no preference for who would win the leadership race and become Canada’s new prime minister.

She only hopes the new government will work with Waterloo as well as the Trudeau government had in terms of funding initiatives and agreements.

“We really need a new social and economic fiscal framework from the provincial and the federal governments, so I hope this is an opportunity to work with whomever the new leader is, whether it’s short term or long term, on that priority.”

Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie, also took to social media to say, “Congratulations to newly elected Liberal leader Mark Carney! Guelph is always ready to work collaboratively on any initiative that will help our great city!”

570 NewsRadio reached out to the City of Cambridge last week to see if Mayor Jan Liggett had a preference as to who won the Liberal leadership but no statement has been sent back at this time.
