Comedian Jeremy Hotz is bringing his Très Misérables comedy tour to Ontario, which includes a stop in Guelph.
“Everything I talk about is supposedly miserable, so I think I’m in pretty high fashion right now, don’t you?”
Hotz spoke with CityNews Kitchener this week about how relatable his content is right now, given current world affairs.
“Yeah, I’ve never been more popular,” joked Hotz.
He first embarked on the “Très Mis” tour in 2024 and resumed hitting the stage in January for the 2025 leg. Both the tour’s name and the promotional poster spoof the musical, Les Misérables. CityNews Kitchener asked Hotz if it was his idea to recreate the iconic imagery.
“No, that was my manager’s idea to put me like the little girl,” said Hotz. “But I look more like Dee Snider.”
The poster also features Shackleton, Hotz’ Chihuahua, who joins him on tour and is a big star these days.
“I knew he was a pretty dog but I didn’t think people would just go crazy for him. He has no talent, he just comes running out at the end. He’s just good-looking, that’s it.”
Hotz also had a simple reason for launching his latest tour.
“I had to get up and get out of the house because I noticed I was just staying in too much, so I figured if I toured… I would get more exercise.”
Très Misérables is his 10th national tour and the second since COVID-19 hit. He said the pandemic was certainly a learning experience for us all.
“We all learned that we can persevere and go on — and look at us. We persevered, we’ve gone on, and now we’re being attacked by well… Trump.”
While Hotz is a crown jewel here in Canada, he’s performed abroad plenty, including in the U.S.
When asked if there are any differences between performing in front of Canadian and American crowds, the comedian laughed.
“You can do the jokes much shorter because (Canadians) get them much sooner,” Hotz joked. “That’s the truth! I’m telling the truth.”
While Hotz won’t be performing in Waterloo Region this time around, he isn’t a stranger to this community. He was even reminiscing about the old Yuk Yuk’s downtown Kitchener.
“I did play that Yuk Yuk’s that was open in Kitchener! That was one of the rooms that helped me develop,” explained Hotz. “I’ve always had a shine for Kitchener, they were behind me right from the beginning.”
Local comedy fans can travel up Highway 7 to see Hotz this weekend as he’s taking the stage at River Run Centre in Guelph on Feb. 8.
“I like Guelph a lot, it’s a good place,” he said.
Tickets are still available and next on his agenda is a stop in London on Feb. 9 and a trip to Hamilton on Feb. 13.
As for what’s next after this tour, Hotz says he has plans but he’s staying tight-lipped.
“Yeah, I can’t tell you. But it’s good stuff! So look out, you’re going to see my big nose on things. I’m sorry, I’m already apologizing. I’m just saying — not all performers are pretty!”
