Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) are investigating after multiple shots were fired into several residences in Cambridge.

Around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday police received a call from a person who noticed damage to a home in the area of Munch Avenue between Hilldale Drive and Harrison Drive. By 10 a.m. police notified the public of an investigation and a road closure through that stretch of Munch Avenue.

No injuries have been reported, Cherri Greeno, director of corporate affairs for WRPS, told CityNews in an interview.

“Upon investigation and upon police arrival, we did determine that that damage was consistent with gunshots being fired into the residence,” she said. “It is early in the investigation, so at this point, we do not know if this was targeted or if it was random.”

There are holes into the front of a residence and at least two other homes at the rear of Munch Avenue, police confirmed.

Greeno said there are no descriptions of suspect(s) and no arrests have been made in connection to the incident.

Officials said the damage in the area is “consistent with shots being fired.”

Police are now working to determine the timeline as to when that damage occurred, and when exactly the shots may have been fired.

“We’ll be conducting a canvas of the area, speaking to residents and anyone with information,” Greeno said.

It’s unclear when that road closure may be lifted, though police have warned to expect an increased police presence in the area for “most of the day,” asking motorists to avoid the area.

‘Loud commotion’ reported

It was just before 2:30 a.m. when Ahmed, a homeowner in the community, heard a lot of noise outside.

“I’m looking outside trying to see because I thought somebody was breaking into a vehicle or something, and don’t see anybody (and) don’t see anything,” he said in an interview.

Ahmed said that he checked his door cameras to see if it recorded anything.

“It picks up sound, and you could hear the distinct gunshots,” he said. “And it’s not even like it’s consistent, it’s just erratic shots, but right after another, that’s all I really heard.”

Although this commotion was alarming to Ahmed he did say that about a year ago nearby shots were also fired.

“Then a little bit before that, a year and a half ago, there were probably more shots fired down three or four streets over,” he said. “So it’s not the first time, but it’s gotten worse in the last year and a bit; and I’ve been here almost five years.”

Anyone with information that could assist with the investigation is asked to contact police at 519-570-9777. Anonymous tips can also be made through Crime Stoppers.
