Regional council approves roundabout designs near Cambridge high school

The region officially approved the designs of a roundabout in Cambridge this week that has garnered much discussion.

One particular piece of the design includes a pedestrian underpass that would go under the roundabout at Franklin Boulevard between Bishop Street and Avenue Road. The proposed roundabout is also near St. Benedict’s Catholic High School and has some parents worried about safety.

Ward 8 Councillor Nicolas Ermeta said residents believe this decision does not reflect the will of those in Cambridge and they still have concerns.

“People don’t feel safe in a tunnel,” he said. “They’re concerned about potential criminal activity and that is a valid concern.”

Other concerns include safety for students walking in the area.

The designs have been the topic of much debate, including a public meeting near St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School back in April. The region’s Sustainability, Infrastructure and Development Committee approved the designs earlier this month.

The region has yet to buy the land from the school board, and construction is set to begin in 2027.
