National poppy campaign starts today across Waterloo Region

Local businesses and stores will have boxes filled with poppies for the National Poppy Campaign over the next three weeks.

The annual campaign runs from Oct. 25 to Nov. 11, Remembrance Day, to raise money for veterans and veteran programs.

Joe Gowing, the president of the Preston chapter of the Canadian Legion, said drivers were out delivering to over 300 locations this morning around the municipality, which include gas stations, corner stores, restaurants and small businesses up to Hespeler Road and over to Sportsworld.

He said every year, they only raise between $30,000-40,000 for veteran programs.

“It is low, we definitely would like to get more funds to be able to support our veterans and veterans organizations out there,” said Gowing.

Some of the organizations they donate to include seeing eye dogs for veterans and the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League

Canvassers will also be around looking for funds at local grocery stores, as well as Beer Store and LCBO locations. Gowing said they are also looking for volunteers.

Anyone who is wearing a poppy during the season is asked to wear it on the left side of the chest over your heart. Gowing noted that centers will be available that help keep it in place.

The Preston Legion will be hosting their Remembrance Day parade at 10 a.m., marching from the legion at 334 Westminster Dr. N., Cambridge. Wreaths are available for purchase from the legion.
