Rangers defeat Storm in shootout, extending point streak to eight games

It was a close one, but the Kitchener Rangers managed to pull out the victory on Saturday 3-2 against the Guelph Storm.

Guelph was on the board first with a goal by Jake Karabela early in the second period, followed by another from Parker Snelgrove eight minutes later. The Rangers cut their lead in half with a goal by Cameron Mercer with less than two minutes to go in the period. Luke Ellinas tied it up at 2-2, scoring his third goal in three games. The game would go to a shootout, with Tanner Lam and Trent Swick scoring for the Rangers.

570 colour commentator Paul Fixter said rookie goaltender Jason Schaubel was a big reason why the rangers won the game.

“Ice water in his veins, without a doubt,” said Fixter. “It’s often said that your goaltender has to be your best player, tonight that was very apparent.

Kitchener currently sits atop the Midwest Division and second in the Western Conference.

The Rangers will take on Guelph one more time this weekend to finish off their 3 in 3 weekend when the storm comes to town on Sunday night.

Puck drop is at 6 p.m., you can hear all the action on 570 news radio starting at 5:30 with the pregame show with Mike Farwell and Paul Fixter.
