Two kayakers rescued from Grand River by Waterloo Regional Police, Cambridge Fire Department

Another tragedy on the Grand River was avoided on Thursday night as emergency crews rescued a pair of kayakers who were stranded by treacherous water near Cambridge.

According to Waterloo Regional Police, officers responded to the area of Linear Park at 9:30 p.m. The kayakers called emergency services to be rescued after conditions on the river became dangerous.

With help from the Cambridge Fire Department, the two kayakers were safely brought back to land.

“If the water is looking treacherous, especially with the rain we’ve been having, it does not take much for the river to become a dangerous situation,” said WRPS Constable Chris Iden.

Last month, two women died after being swept up by treacherous water conditions while riding a two-person floatation device on the Grand River.

“It’s important to make sure you’re familiar with the area that you’re going to,” added Iden. “If you’re new to exploring the river, there’s lots of avenues where you can get information from. There are websites available to inform you of what the water conditions are like.”
