Deutschmann Law gains a new partner

Making the leap from employee to partner usually requires a period of adjustment for any individual who finds themselves in such an opportunistic position. For lawyer Nick de Koning, becoming a partner in Deutschmann Law, the area’s leading name in personal injury and disability law, was simply a natural progression.

Arriving at Deutschmann Law in 2018 after serving as a partner with Miller Thomson, de Koning quickly discovered an appreciation for the working environment at Deutschmann Law, a smaller but expanding team employing eleven dedicated legal professionals. 

“There were good things that came from working for a really big firm,” said de Koning, who, besides earning his law degree at Western University, also earned his BA in Economics at the University of Waterloo. “I came to Deutschmann because I was looking for new horizons and a workplace that didn’t have such a corporate feel. In a small firm, we’re more nimble. What I like about is that anyone can be a client. Our clients come from all different walks of life, different ages, and different backgrounds. We’re able to simply focus on what we do well, which is helping people who have had a major problem or misfortune in their life.”

After serving six years as part of the team at Deutschmann Law, de Koning became a partner in the firm in early 2024.  It was an easy decision based on his experience working alongside his colleagues in the organization.

“I knew the brand for this office was very strong in the community, and they already had a good number of clients and lots of work,” said de Koning. “I knew that as long as we worked hard and served our clients, things would go well.”

As a partner in a firm specializing in personal injury and disability law, de Koning appreciates the positive impact he and the Deutschmann team can have in the lives of their clients.

“We’re dealing with people who have had a major crisis or life incident, a fracture, brain injuries, people who have wound up in the hospital for long periods of time,” he said. “ I feel that we’re helping these people keep their lives on track and to receive compensation for what’s happened to them and to help navigate an insurance system that’s really not always kind to people.

For anyone thinking about starting a claim, de Koning said it’s important to act early to ensure they are in compliance with the laws governing personal injuries.

“There are a lot of important time limits to be aware of to be able to make or present a case in Ontario. For certain kinds of accidents and claims, there are actual written notice provisions set by statutes and provincial legislation in this case. For example, claims against municipalities for ice and snow on sidewalks require the individual to provide written notice to the court of the municipality within 10 days of the accident. It’s a very short timeline indeed.”
