Three-hour negotiation with barricaded man in Waterloo ends peacefully

It was a long afternoon in the university district of Waterloo, where police negotiated with a man they say barricaded himself in a building for three hours.

It all reportedly started with an assault near University Avenue West and Lester Street Tuesday afternoon.

Police were called around 2:45 p.m. to reports of a disturbance involving an intoxicated man.

The man allegedly assaulted someone before barricading himself in a residential building in the area.

Around 5:45 p.m., the man was safely arrested and sent to hospital to be assessed.

A 39-year-old man from Waterloo is facing assault and mischief charges.
