Ontario Hockey League-leader Carson Rehkopf added three points to his season total, but the Kitchener Rangers still fell in overtime 4-3 against the last-placed Niagara Ice Dogs Friday at the Aud.
It was a familiar face who stole the show for the Ice Dogs. Goaltender Marcus Vanderberg, who appeared in 29 games for the Rangers over the past two seasons, turned away 44 Kitchener shots.
Head Coach Jussi Ahokas told CityNews 570 that his club didn’t do themselves any favours.
“[Vandenberg] was hot, but I thought we made him hot,” said Ahokas after the game. “We should have had better screens, we were missing the net from really good spots. Our shots weren’t there.”
Forward Zakary Lavoie also scored twice for Niagara, including the overtime winner.
The loss is Kitchener’s third in the last five games, but they still hold onto first place in the OHL’s Western Conference.
