By Brent Cater

A community drug alert has been issued for Waterloo Region after a sharp increase in overdoses and drug poisonings.

The Waterloo Region Integrated Drugs Strategy issued the community drug alert on Nov. 15.

The alert notes 44 cases were reported between Nov. 7 and Nov. 14., along with two suspected overdose-related deaths.

The Drug Checking Program at the Kitchener Consumption and Treatment Services Site detected two fentanyl samples containing ketamine.

Drug users are being urged to take precautions like never using illicit substances alone, always carrying naloxone, and visiting the Consumption and Treatment Services site in downtown Kitchener.
