Councillors, residents raise concerns over Laurel Street development

City of Cambridge councillors and citizens have serious concerns about a proposed development that would see more than a thousand apartments built in the middle of a Preston neighbourhood.

Council held a planning meeting Tuesday night about a mutli-tower apartment complex for 777 Laurel Street, with several towers ranging in height from seven- to fourteen-storeys.

John Cressman, a resident living near the proposed development said he’s never seen densification like this anywhere in Cambridge.

“Can we stop this, let me call it, a bizarre proposal and ask for a new proposal which will both enchance the neighbourhood and preserve what the existing neighbour enjoy about their properties.”

The project would be in Ward 3, and councillor for that ward, Corey Kimpson, had concerns about fewer parking spots than apartments, and how all the traffic would impact the neighbourhood.

Councillors were, however, excited at the idea of having a large development within walking distance to downtown Preston shops.

Trevor Hawkins from MHBC Planning spoke at the meeting on behalf of the developer.

Council voted to have the developer call its own public meeting at a future date to hear concerns from area residents.
