Rise in overdoses in Guelph area prompts health alert

An overdose alert has been issued for the Guelph area after a recent rise in ODs.

On August 11, the Wellington Guelph Drug Strategy said there have been 17 overdoses in the last two weeks. It includes four suspected drug-related deaths.

It’s believed light purple fentanyl has been involved in atypical drug poisonings in that region. They have seen users become completely unresponsive, have extremely low heart rates but normal breathing rates, and required higher than normal doses of naloxone to be administered.

Those who use illicit substances are being urged to take precautions due to the unregulated drug supply.

Tips include never using drugs alone, always carrying naloxone, and visiting a consumption and treatment services site.
