Waterloo Starbucks is first in Ontario to unionize

The Starbucks at Waterloo Town Square is the first in the province to vote to unionize.

Workers voted Thursday to join the United Steelworkers Union, District 6.

A statement from the union does not specify how many workers voted in favour, but describes it as a “wide margin.”

Neither does the statement outline what labour or wage concerns the workers in Waterloo have.

Darlene Jalbert, the USW District 6 Organizing Co-ordinator, calls it a history making vote, adding the “employees took a bold first step in improving their workplace and they won!”

The USW also represents Starbucks in Vancouver, Victoria, and Langley, in British Columbia, as well as in Calgary and Edmonton.
