Police investigating several disturbances at St. Mary’s High School basketball game

Waterloo Regional Police continue to investigate following two separate incidents in the vicinity of St. Mary's High School on Thursday.

According to police, officers responded to the area of Hillmount Street around 3:30 p.m. after receiving reports of “approximately 30 teenagers” assembling for a fight.

It's alleged that a resident in the area alerted police that they had seen a “pipe” involved in that dispute.

As police arrived on scene, the majority of the youth are said to have fled the area – though two were arrested. One of those youths has since been charged with three counts of breaching probation as well as obstructing police. The other youth has been charged with failing to comply with an undertaking.

Just over an hour later around 4:45 p.m., regional police responded to a number of disturbances involving physical altercations during a basketball game at St. Mary's High School.

It's said that there were roughly 300-400 people in attendance at that basketball game, and at one point some officers were surrounded by a group of attendees “provoking violence.” Police said members of that crowd circled police and acted aggressively towards them resulting in additional units being requested to assist.

Police also noted that opposing, visiting teams had to be escorted out of the area as a safety precaution, and parts of the school were locked down to ensure the safety of everyone in attendance.
