Elmira District Secondary School was briefly under a hold and secure on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Waterloo Region District School Board, it was lifted around 3:30 p.m.
The board initially announced the hold and secure was implemented at the direction of Waterloo Regional Police.
However, a police spokesperson said the school put itself under a hold and secure.
“At approximately 2:40 p.m., officers responded to the Elmira District Secondary School for a weapons incident. Waterloo Regional Police did not place the school into a hold and secure,” read an e-mail statement from WRPS Public Information Officer, Brad Hickey.
WRDSB Communications Officer, Estefania Brandenstein, told CityNews 570 that the initial indication came from police, and the school then went under hold and secure out of an abundance of caution.
It's also noted that at the time of the incident, only some students and staff were present as the school day ended at 2:20 p.m.
It was the second hold and secure to be issued at a local high school this week.
One was in effect at Waterloo Collegiate Institute on Monday afternoon due to a reported weapons incident in the University Avenue and Weber Street area.
Police said a hold and secure was triggered at WCI as a safety precaution as there was a threat of a potential altercation. No charges were laid as a result of the incident.
